PCSHS Trainee Worshops
Today you have participated in some workshops in which your peers introduced some teaching activities to supplement a lesson from a coursebook. Write about something that you learned today, for instance about an activity you observed that you could usefully adopt in your classroom.
Today I have participated in workshops in which my peers introduced some teaching activities to supplement a lesson from a coursebook.I have learnt many techniques that I can adapt to use in my class . I learnt more how to teach English in every skills. For instance about an activity I observed that I could usefully adapt in my classroom. I think I like every lesson but some activities or some lesson I have to change some content or some vocabulary that more interested or suitable for level of my students.I think all workshops are very useful for me.
ReplyDeleteHi Ying, thanks for your response. Can you single out an activity, though, that was particularly interesting to you. a way of doing something in the classroom that you hadn't thought of before?
DeleteDavid :-)
I think I like that some groups used video clip to teach listening skill and rearrange the events from their listening and let the students discuss in group or in pair think about different the end of the story. I think it is a good way to encourage students to be creative person and they can practice their speaking skill with their friends.I got the ideas how to select the video clip to use in the class.
DeleteLike me I think all activities are useful for teaching and teachers can bring them to adapt in their class.
DeleteHi, Ying I agree with you all worksheets are very useful , interesting there are many kinds of worksheet we can select level for students (pre A1-C2) I will adapt in my class.
DeleteHi Ying, thanks for sharing regarding some particular activities you enjoyed. Thinking of a different end to a story in pairs certainly allows for creativity, conversation practice and recycling of vocabulary.
DeleteGood thinking,
David
Today, I observed the class with our friends, and I have a good idea from my friends to adapt in my lesson. Almost of the groups that presented and shared the special teaching techniques from the coursebook showed or demonstrated them excellently. Especially, some kinds of activities in pre-teaching, for example; brainstorming general ideas of the topic from the pictures, encouraging students to learn and predict the lesson by using video like Tsunami clip and beautiful pictures of the places. That's a good idea. Some demonstrated the step of practice for language skills differently, for instance, rearranging the story for reading , listening before reading the passage and discussing about the correct answers by using the model of the dialogue how to discuss with the partner ,and making sentences with the pictures. In addition, writing mine-mapping to tell your own story in the productive stage, it makes me interested in teaching about creative writing. Finally, it's very nice for adapting my lesson and my learners.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response to the workshops, Bee. You have alluded to a wide range of the activities used to supplement the textbook by your peers. I really like activities involving arranging chunks of text in their correct order e.g. paragraphs from a story or utterances from a dialogue. Successfully ordering these chunks draws upon both grammatical competence and textual competence, or what some theorists call discourse competence.
DeleteDavid :-)
I think pre-teaching is very importance for students if teacher let students to the interested activities, it can easily lead students to lesson. And from the presentation of the trainees I got a lot of activities such as brainstorming, watching video, or predict vocabulary from the pictures.
DeleteMind mapping is a good way to have the students brainstrom their ideas systematically. The map we made also serves as the blueprint of our writing.
DeleteI agree with you Bee. Teaching about writing skill is very difficult for me. And Bee can explain many interesting teaching strategies for using about creative writing in my classes.
DeleteI have learnt many useful activities from participating workshops today. Start with, allowing students read in pair and switch to ask and answer the questions after that correct them by teacher make reading activity more actively than letting them read individually. Moreover, brainstorming words to mind map and write the sentences in group, students will be confident because they help one another. Next, matching vocabulary and then making story is also interesting process. The others powerful one is cutting story in short paragraph maybe a good idea which I used a few years ago to teach reading but I thought this technique took long time. However, I will bring it come back and improve myself by considering the level of the text.
ReplyDeleteHi Ni, thanks for your response. I agree that cutting up texts into chunks and having students rearrange them is a good idea. Doing so can be challenging, as you report. Perhaps the key to success is alerting students to linking words and phrases, synonyms, pronouns and other cohesive devices that provide clues to the correct order of chunks. Then there is the level of your students to take into account when choosing a text.
DeleteCheers,
David :-)
having learners rearrange the story before listening or reading in pair or group, this hint helps them comprehend what they are reading or listening easily. For the learners who study English for second language, they should let them from ease to difficulty.
DeleteHi Ni, I think it's a good idea to let students work in group instead of work individual. I also agree with you about using mind map to help student get the idea for the first draft before letting them write the story.
DeleteI agree with you that the mind map is an interesting activity and to brainstorm students in writing.
DeleteI agree with you for cutting story in short paragraph because I ever used to teach reading skill with my students. This technique make my student have participate when the do the activity and this activity can check students' comprehension well.
DeleteI agree with you. I like to asks my student make their mind map to summarize the lesson.

ReplyDeleteHi Tum, thanks for your response. Can I ask you, though, to single out a particular activity that 'rocked your socks off' so to speak? Move from the general to the specific!
DeleteDavid :-)
All of activities are very interesting especially about the vocabulary teachers can demonstrate the way to let the students help to elicit more vocabulary and I think I can bring theses activities to use with my class.
DeleteThank you, David, the activity that it impress me is "Reading Skills" from Penkhae, Numyen and Ohm because the students read the text and share the story to your friend. I think the student can read and move and I adapt and use in my class. I think the activity is useful for me.
DeleteI agree with Tum I like all lessons there are make me got new idea about techniques teaching in the class and very useful for me I adapt these activities in my class.
DeleteHi Tum, thanks for responding to single out one activity in particular that impressed you. Why, though, do you think having students read & then share what they have read with a peer is a good idea?
DeleteDavid
As I participated in several workshops from my peers today, I learnt many interesting activities and techniques which some of them were the same as I used in my classes. Some activities were slightly different from what I had used, and some activities I never use in my classes such as;
ReplyDelete1.Divide students to work in groups by using the buttons.
2.Bingo game for reviewing the verbs in the past but listen to the sentences in present.
3.Listen, write, and retell the story about shark attacked in Waikiki, Hawaii.
4.My map with some guidelines for writing about a place that I want to go which help writing sentences easier.
Therefore I would love to adopt all these activities in my classes and I believe that my
classes will be more interesting to my students and also to engage students in the lessons.
Hi Somanat, thanks for your interesting response. There were certainly some creative ways used to divide the class into groups today ... lollies of different colours was a new one to me, as was playing rock, paper, scissors. Playing bingo where the caller says the present tense verb and the player has to cross off the past tense form would be a good way to practise irregular past tense verbs. All the best in adapting the above activities for your classes.
DeleteCheers,
David :-)
i agree with you. some activities are easy to do but i never done. Just take it in this course. Game or funny activities draw their attention, concentration into the class. starting with good emotion lead them to the successful learning
DeleteI agree with you and I think all activities are very interested and teachers should bring them to use with students by adapting in suitable level and their abilities. Like you I got the technique for teaching listening from the trainees that they used an interesting topic and funny content which it can make students have more interested in the lesson.
DeleteToday I have participated in workshops with my friends introduced some teaching activities to supplement a lesson a coursebook, I have a variety of activities techniques from friends and me, I think I like all lesson because I can apply activities to teach in my class, I believe my students like the new activities I will show them.555
ReplyDeleteHi Normy, thanks for your response. I need you to go deeper though. I want you to single out a particular activity that 'stopped you in your tracks,' an activity that made you think "Wow, I've never thought of doing it like that before!"
DeleteDavid :-)
I agree with you Normy I think all of workshops are good idea I learned many interesting activities, many techniques in the class some activity I never use before, but today the trainee workshop it make me have new ideas so when I get back to the school I quite sure that I can create many kind about teaching methodologies.I will adapt in my class.
DeleteToday I have participated in some workshop from peers.I have learnt many activities and techniques that I never use in my class. I like using bingo game for teaching past simple tense. It is a good idea for dividing groups by using the button. I also like using pictures by listening the text and choose the correct answer.Every groups have presented by using brainstorming that it is useful for generating creative thoughts and ideas. So I would love to adopt all these activities in my classes and I will improve my lesson by using these interesting activities.
ReplyDeleteHi Khae, thanks for sharing your perspectives on the workshops. I agree with you on brainstorming. It is a tremendously powerful technique because it draws upon the power of the group or class (depending on the context). It allows everybody who can to 'bring something to the table.' It allows us all to be a resource for each other ,,, and this leads to another point, in a language class setting much of the learning taking place will happen in the context of student interaction or in other words students teaching each other!
DeleteCheers,
David
I agree with everyone about using different and interesting techniques and I would like to add more idea about Bingo activity according my experience. Bingo activity can be used in new words after presenting them. My students like and are able to remember the new words that I taught. I think it's excellent! But some activities, although they are enjoyable and fun for the students, they may be bored in the class if we don't change other activities. For that reason, we should use different activities, not the same. Find various ones and adapt for students.
DeleteI agree with you that it is a good idea to dividing groups by using the button.using pictures by listening the text and choose the correct answer.Every groups have presented by using brainstorming that it is useful for generating creative thoughts and ideas.
DeleteHi! Khae, I like the activity that using pictures for the listening as well. I think we can adopt this activity to our class.
DeleteAfter I have participated in Trainee Workshop.Everyone is well prepared and intends to teach this time very much that make me get many idea and various activities from my friends.Teaching Techniques that I will adapt to teach in my class :
ReplyDelete1.Divide students into two groups by using card and draw lots (New ways for me)
2.Using past tense verbs to play bingo game by use listening past sentence from teacher
3.Intensive reading by use interesting story such as sherlock holmes
I think my classroom and my students must change in a good way.
Hi Namyen, thanks for sharing. I agree with you that there were some really creative ways for dividing a class into groups modelled during the workshops. I could understand how the class was divided into two groups by separating the winners and losers at rock, paper, scissors but I couldn't figure out how the pairs were formed from name cards. Trainees had to find their own names on the cards but how then did they find their partners? Can you explain it to me?
DeleteCheers,
David :-)
Hi Nam, I agree with you, everyone is well prepared and tried to find a new technique to teach in class. Moreover students still enjoy the lesson because teacher lead the lesson by using game.
DeleteI think the same thing as you Namyen. Divide students in groups by using cards is very interesting technique. The bingo game is also good technique to engage students in lessons.
DeleteThe card identified the student's name in it, and the teacher will switch and let the students stand in front of the class before they turn back to find their name and sit as the card set and your couple is next to you
DeleteI think intensive reading by using sherlock holmes story is suitable for the higher level because there is more vocabularies and complex sentences. It is really interesting for teaching reading skill and students can learn by themselves out of classroom.
DeleteI like a new technique about intensive reading by using sherlock holmes story but I choose a suitable text to match students' level.
DeleteToday I have participated in workshops with my friends introduced some teaching activities to supplement a lesson a coursebook.I learned many interesting activities, many techniques in the class some activity I never use before, but today the trainee workshop it make me have new ideas so when I get back to the school I quite sure that I can create many kind about teaching methodologies.I prefer almost workshop activities, especially city life and country life activities from Nong and Bee because there are variety activities and it's really suitable for grade 9 students. I will adopt all these workshop activities in my class and I think very useful for me to create the activities in my class.
ReplyDeleteHi Toiting, thanks for sharing! I particularly enjoyed Nong & Bee's competitive brainstorming activity ... writing words on the board to describe the pictures of town and country in a 'relay race' with the other group. Later, interestingly, the T & F questions relating to the story about Sarah and Annabelle presented a cognitive challenge in that the country girl was in the city and the city girl in the country. I actually had to think really carefully about those questions.
DeleteCheers,
David
You're absolutely right. Nong and Bee's teaching technique make me think the way I shall use in class for compare and contrast essay writing in leading in process.
DeleteAfter observing my friends’teaching,, I have got new experiences and new techniques from our friends for applying in my class. All group introduced new ways of teaching relating with four skills drawing from the coursebook. Fundamentally, starting with making students work in pairs or in group was awesome. One activity that I like the most is “Place to visit”. Students are instructed to read a story in pairs. Later, students assisted each other handling with the unfamiliar words and searching for further information. After that teacher asked students to draw a mind map as an instrument for making the main topic of their stories. I think it’s a smart idea to allow the students having the first draft of writing by using mind map. This technique help students to develop their writing skills effectively.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response, Nong. I found it insightful. Yes that mind mapping technique for identifying the different areas of content required when writing about a trip was interesting. It was cool to see the trainees' creativity come to the fore when Benz shared about his idea of a second honeymoon and Jang a trip to Mars.
DeleteCheers,
David :-)
I agree with Pee Nong that it’s a smart idea to allow the students having the first draft of writing by using mind map. This technique help students to develop their writing skills effectively. Because they can identify the content and it is a good way to encourage them to creative their ideas so the teacher can see the variety of their ideas through using mind map.
DeleteI have a point of that , too. Allowing students work in pair or group is extremely good especially when there are many stories to read. It's not only practicing students to cooperate in class but also managing the class.
DeleteHi Nong, Place to visit is one of interesting activity for me to.
DeleteI think the students can freely write on mind map to share their ideas. Also, they were extrinsic to grammar and the mistakes. It was the nice way to drive the students love writing.
I agree that mind-mapping is effective for writing. I always do in my class begin with mind-mapping for writing. Students begin with a word, then make sentence and put all together. This enhance them to create idea easily.
DeleteFor trainee workshops section, I have got many ideas and techniques in teaching from all groups. Especially, the activities in lead-in and techniques to set in pair or group all are interesting and useful. Letting students think the vocabulary that involves to the picture, letting students make mind-mapping from words then make the sentence. Some groups used video clip to teach listening skill and rearrange the events for reading. These lead them learn with enjoyable tasks. It is failure if they feel bored. All presented activities today can push them reach the goal. The teachers should have an opportunity to train once a year or share techniques as today, I believe that Thai students get more high potential in learning English. After observing, I told myself that I have to plan my lesson before I start teaching my students by using these techniques.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we learnt many techniques from our peers and these techniques can help improving our students' potential.
DeleteAbsolutely true! Language learning can be effective if we are positive like students who have fun with creative teaching activities.
DeleteHi Rin, I agree with using techniques to help students' learning including pictures, PowerPoint, or video which are interested materials and activities. Besides, working in pair and group can make students have participate in class.
DeleteThanks for sharing, Rin. indeed their were some creative grouping exercises, some inventive brainstorming activities and some worthwhile text-sequencing activities used. Just like you, I'm looking forward to using some of the activities I observed on Tuesday in my classes.
DeleteCheers,
David
I have watched the demonstration of the teacher tainees in my class and I could see how the techniques we learnt in the textbook work in real situation. Some work very well. Anyway we need to bear in mind that the students we are going to teach is totally different from the trainees. If we want to apply the activity to ous class, we need to monitor and set the mood and tone of the activity until it meets the students' characters.
ReplyDeleteI like the demonstration of Somanat and Rin who taught us about the sequence of situations. The story of Sherlock Holms goes well with the learners' interest. I enjoyed the activity so much because I wanna know how the story ended. I also love the way they encoirage the students to guess the meaning of words and try to give the definitions in English.
Thanks Ohm for yr commendation our teaching, I feel happy that u love it. but i see the problem 1. Some assignment is not clear then make the trainees confused (find partner from the name card) 2. Rearranging the story, it may be too long not suitable with time. These problems, i will adjust it for my class. Thanks again kha
DeleteI agree with you, Ohm. We should keep in mind that our students are different from the trainees. Therefore, we need to adjust the lesson and make it fit to our students when we use each technique in classes.
DeleteThanks for posting, Ohm. You are right, teachers will need to carefully consider their classes' character and needs, before adapting the activities we have learned about in this programme for their use.
DeleteYou have a point about the use of the Sherlock Holmes story in Rin & Somanat's class. You were motivated to engage with the sequencing activity because you wanted to know what happened in the end. Perhaps we would do well to utilise the detective, adventure and suspense genres in class because other students will no doubt be similarly motivated when reading such exciting stories.
Cheers,
David
Today I have participated in workshops with my friends and me I think I like all lesson I can apply activities to teach my class.I believe my students like the new activities.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Pee Nancy that we can apply activities to teach in our class from the trainee workshop.
DeleteHi Nancy, thanks for sharing. Can you go deeper though? Can you single out one particular activity you would like to use in your class?
DeleteCheers,
David
For the trainee workshop in teaching by using their plans, I got the way to approach my students for example, tasks, games, or the interesting activities from other group. I like the situation when teachers lead students into the lesson by using games because it can motivate students well. Some groups used the different teaching to teach the difficult skill such as writing and reading and they can use technologies to make students be awakened and have participate in class. Also, for their demonstration I think the trainees have many experiences in teaching and they can manage and choose more suitable activities with their students.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Pee Jang that we got the many ways to approach our students .We have an idea to use technologies to make students be awakened and have participate in class. Also, for their demonstration I think the trainees have many experiences in teaching and they can manage and choose more suitable activities to our students.
Deleteyes, game or funny activities make the learners always awake and exited. I love yours too (bingo game). This let students pay attentions to listen if they want to win the game. The technique not only promote them in fun but get knowledge too.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteThanks for sharing, Jang. I agree with you that using a game to start off a class can motivate the students. Bee and Nong achieved this when they started their class off with a vocabulary relay. In addition you state that technology can assist in the presentation of complex material. A case in point of this was Namyen's team's presentation of a mind map, to stimulate writing about a trip, on a PowerPont slide.
DeleteCheers,
David
After was being one of the participants in my peers' classroom activities, it was very useful and inspiring to me. I had seen a lot of interesting, creative and effective activities. I think it helps me a lot about my daily classes and even my further teaching career. I had learnt many ways how to group or get learners working together, the most impressive one was T. Toiting with T. Nancy and T. Normy's class. They grouped learners by giving each of them small piece of wooden item. They were tiny items which were animals-like, and learners who got the same animal would be in the same group. I think it is so cute and my students will surely like it.
ReplyDeleteFor about teaching techniques, I like the creative writing at the end of T. Rin and T. Yui class. I think this activity can summarise what they have learnt and give students a chance to think creatively.
Thanks for sharing, Benz. I agree we did see a lot of interesting, creative & effective activities on Tuesday. Some of the approaches to grouping were 'novel' weren't they; an example being Toiting's use of 'buttons' as you commented on.
DeleteCreative writing at the end of a unit is a good idea too. It allows the recycling of words and structures from the lessons and it can be an outlet for students to express how they feel about the topic they have been discussing.
Cheers,
David
I love Toiting's grouping technique too, easy but interesting. This makes the learner alert every time when they are going to have English class. They also learn others personality in their group too.
ReplyDeleteHi Somanat thanks for you like my divide students to work in groups by using the button,I believe that my students like too,the same time,I love when you speak English it clear the words (lovely your voice) but your worksheet it so difficult more than levels grade 9.😏
ReplyDeleteFor trainee workshops I have learn more ideas and teaching techniques from my classmate.I like the demonstration of Palin, Tom and Ying who taught us about a new report by lets the students listen to a new report, asks the students write or shot-note and rearrang the words/phrase and the last lets the students write, tell their story. Many technique form trainee workshops help students to develop their English skill.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Aom. Indeed the progression of activities in Ying, Ni & Tum's class is one that helps learners develop their skills, in this case their writing skills. We might say they use the genre-based approach and examine a news report with their students and help guide them towards writing one.
DeleteCheers,
David
I agree with everybody about using different and interesting techniques,we must to change other activities in class because students not boring in class,But can we do every lesson?
ReplyDeletesure, we can. good point of PCSHS, all use the same book. We just divide the chapter and create the interesting activities. Before sharing, we try out. If it works in your class then share.
