Hi all. we'd like to give you the opportunity to respond to Asli's lesson. Just add your responses by commenting on this post.
What, in your opinion, did Asli do well in her lesson? How, on the other hand, do you think she could have improved it?
What adjectives would you use to describe Asli as a teacher? List several, if you can?
What do you think you can learn from Asli?
I think Asli had lots of good strategies to let her students learn naturally. The students learned the words and the structures until they could communicate in the end. If I have to suggest anything, I think she might add more words and phrases to study next time just to challenge the students. I would describe Asli as a professional, kind, and creative teacher. Teaching young learners is not an easy job. You always need to think of fun and new activities. Also, you must be able to lead those activities and make sure all students have fun and could learn from them. For me who's teaching secondary students, I think I will have to be more creative, thinking of fun activities that will let my students learn enjoyably like her.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Ohm! I agree with you on the adjectives you use to characterize Asli. She is a teacher who really appears to like what she does.
DeleteI agree that young learners respond positively to 'the new,' or in other words 'the novel.' At the same time though I believe that they enjoy the security of classroom routines and activities that are done the same way and in the same order, week in week out. An example of such routines is Asli inviting a student to teach the class each morning.
By the way, what do you think makes an activity 'fun?'
Cheers, David :-)
i agree with Ohm that she is creative, friendly and kind teacher. We can see that all students are happy in her class. For the Vocabulary that you suggest that she should add more, i think its enough due to the limited time.
DeleteI agree with you,Ohm that she had lots of good strategies in class and I believe we can use them in our class as well. It is also not easy to create a fun class which engage all young students as Asli did.
DeleteTo me, what makes the activity fun may be teacher's role she gives to the selected student. They will have a chance to act as a teacher. They will look at the class from the different perspective, interacting with their classmates and leading the activity. What I also love is that this is a good strategy that the students, both the one selected as a teacher and the rest, can review the lesson they learned. The selected students will ask their classmates about the lessons they learned last time and the classmates will try to find the answers.
DeleteI agree with your last comment,P'Ohm.The activity that suppose student as teacher and interacting with their classmate is very well and this point's good to lead in next step.
DeleteYes I agree with you Ohm, teacher has to create new and more activities to motivate them to interested in the lesson. However, I think teacher should consider about suitable time too.
DeleteI've already watched Asli's clip of good teaching. She was well-organized and prepared the lesson very well. She started in class with an interesting warming up. "Would you like to be a teacher?" I think it's a great idea for young learner class. She looked very friendly and fair with the students, especially, with the randomized student by picking name stick. She didn't force the girl to be a teacher in front of the class but she firstly asked her whether she would be a teacher. She was fair. Each activity, she could control the whole class, and she did the presentation stage easily and clearly with the feeling masks of emotional adjective: happy, scared, thirsty, tired, ugly, sad, etc. The next, she had an interesting activity with an appropriate game "Memory Test" with younger learners by seeing the machined pictures and the most favourite activity is she taught adjective with sentence, for instance; Getting a present makes me happy. (Gerund + V + object + adjective) She did it smoothly by presenting and practicing. The student could use the adjective with sentence correctly. The students gained the receptive and productive skills in the class. And the end of the class, she did production by asking the student express the feeling with adjective. I think she could improve the student’s skills. Slightly, As I’m a teacher in a secondary school, I will add student’s feedback in the end of the class or homework in a question “How do you feel in the class today? And why?” to check both student’s feeling and my instructional process.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Bee. You're right about how Asli invites a student to be the teacher rather than simply declaring that such and such a student is going to be teaching today. In other instances Asli also pays respect to her students by asking them for instance "Are you ready for x activity?"
DeleteI don't think we can go as far as saying the students gained both receptive and productive skills in the class. They appeared to me as very much still trying the target structure out rather than having already achieved the ability to produce it.
Finally, I think the idea of seeking student feedback re. a class at the end of the class is a good one. You've reminded me to try this approach out.
Cheers,
David :-)
i extremely like yr idea to let students feedback about the activity then we know how they feel (like or dislike) or they may add more idea for the next time.
DeleteI really agree with the personality of teacher, she is very kind and friendly. I think students love to study with kind teachers more than stress teachers. And doing production by asking students is a good way that teachers should to do because it is checking their understanding.
DeleteI agree with you on the last comment that if we were a teacher in a secondary school, we will add student’s feedback in the end of the class or homework in a question “How do you feel in the class today? And why?” to check both student’s feeling and our instructional process.
DeleteAfter watching Asli's video, it seems to me that she was an enthusiastic teacher which is one of the good thing for teaching. Also, she had friendly character since she smiled and paid attention to students and get them to join and enjoy activities. However, she could have more chance to some students who tried to answer the question because her class was not too big to give all students share their ideas. In fact, I am really appreciated her for different teaching technique since those several activities were prepared well as they went on step by step and achieved lesson objectives. I feel inspired to improve my English teaching in many ways for developing students not only skills but also their attitudes.
ReplyDeleteHi Ni, thanks for sharing. I agree with you that Asli is enthusiastic. It energizes me just watching her teach. With her 'can do' attitude, she is the kind of person who lights up a room when she enters it.
DeleteIt is important to try to allow all the various members of a class to contribute to discussions so I appreciate your comment that Asli could have done better in this respect.
You are also right in commenting that the activities Asli used were well-prepared and built upon each other. It certainly takes time to create resources like the masks and phrase cards Asli used, but the nice thing is such materials can be re-used with the following term's class.
I'm interested in what way you would like to develop your students attitudes. Can you let us know?
Cheers,
David :-)
Loke me, the video does not only give me some fun techniques to be used in class but it also inspires me to find and even to invent some more effective ones.
DeleteSince students are on Maths and Science program then almost all don't like English. In my opinion,we will learn well when we like it. I always find the way for my English teaching such as how to improve vocabulary or grammar teaching which my students will get both knowledge and enjoyment. For example, I started teaching vocabulary the class with matching game and allowed them work in group. I walked around the class to observe and found all members help each other do the activity.
DeleteHi, Ni, thanks for your clarification on how you have been working to change your students attitude to learning English.
DeleteDavid :-)
After watching the video, I like the way that Asli use for her teaching because she had an interesting activity that make students were alert all time. Using drawing and masks can drive the students fun and they happily learning. In addition, she well managed her class with asking question and give correct sentences to her students. However, I think there were some students who was called their names that is very important to make students have good attitude with class and teacher. Therefore, teachers should remember all the name of students.
ReplyDeleteHi Jang
DeleteThanks for sharing. Asli's activities certainly did keep her students on the edge of their seats and raising their hands. You're right too on the effect of visual images in her class e.g. the masks and the 'feeling' pictures played on screen.
Do you think though that Asli called some students the wrong names? I remember noticing that a student was absent, but did she call any students by the wrong names? Can you show me where?
Cheers,
David
I am not sure, but I think every students should do the activity. Teacher is the one who motivate them by using many way such as calling the correct name or remembering the name of the students.
DeleteHowever, I will be back to watch this video again.
Thank you for your comment.
I agree with Jang that it's important to remember the students' names because I believe it makes them feel that they are a part in the class but as David said we should be careful not calling the wrong name. As I can see the same thing that Asli created many interesting activities and students were happy to participate in her class.
DeleteI agree with JANG that we should remember all the students' names and I also have the question that David gave comment about this "If we call the wrong names, what will happen with their feeling?" I think if it's the first meeting we should find some techniques to remember their names. Maybe, write own their names on the desk in front of them or wear the name badges. For me, in my school with many students in the class (over 30) I used to remember the wrong name despite there was his name on his school shirt, but he'd switched the shirt with his friend.
DeleteI agree with you that teachers should remember all the name of students because It will make the students have a good attitude in the class but I think It is better if teacher ask them to write their name on the paper card because sometimes teacher cannot remember the name of all students.
DeleteI think Asli did very well in her lesson because she prepared many interesting activities and many teaching techniques for her students. She looked very kind and friendly teacher and well organize that let her students learn enjoyably . I can learn may teaching technique from her lesson and I think I should create more fun activities for my students.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Ying. Tell me more though. Give me specifics. Which of her activities did you find most 'interesting' and which of her 'teaching techniques' would you like to incorporate into your teaching practice?
DeleteWhich of Asli activities that the most interesting for me is when she teach adjectives about emotions by using masks that make the students enjoy with her lesson. I think I will use more materials in my class for example projector, Flash card, picture to make the lesson more interesting and I will try to ask them to do more group work or pair work.
DeleteI think so with preparing interesting activities. Teachers must prepare themselves before teaching in class because it is building the confidence and making class smoothly.
DeleteStrongly agree with Teacher Duangporn, I love the way how she used adjective masks. ^_^
DeleteHi Ying, thanks for adding in those details. Indeed Asli's use of the masks is particularly memorable. The masks will surely help the students remember the various 'feeling' words. Nice that you're planning on making you lessons moe 'visual.' I look forward to hearing about the difference doing this makes.
DeleteCheers,
David
I believed that Asli well-planned her lesson. She got her students attention by asking one of them to be a teacher (This is a take turn activity which means everyone has a chance to do the activity). Then she elicited the vocabularies by using the masks with adjectives about emotions. After that, the students worked in pairs with flash pictures about the feeling and the final activity was to feeling in real situations (matching). As I can see that she built up the students on how to use those adjectives bit by bit and when the students worked she mingled to assist students. When some students didn’t understand the sentence she used her body language to help her students out. What I like the most about her lesson is that her class atmosphere was really friendly as the way she made the correction with her students’errors. The materials (all the masks, sentence card, and pictures showing on the projector) which she used in her class made me felt that she is dedicated to her teaching job. (I believe that she prepared them in her own time.) At the end of the class, I think she achieved the objective of her lesson because the students know how to use the correct adjectives in each situation. (The sentence cards which she had prepared.)
ReplyDeleteWell done, Somanat on such a detailed and insightful response to Asli's class!
DeleteI liked how you noticed how Asli used body language to help her students think of the correct words to use etc.Along with gestures, she used facial expressions to good effect too.
I agree with you on the 'materials' she used. They do appear self-made and indicate that she had spent a lot of time preparing for this class.
The students were successful in matching the sentences built up from the phrase cards with the masks and this does suggest that they know how to use the target adjectives correctly. They still have some way to go though, I believe, in being able to use the "'gerund' + makes me + adjective" sentence in spontaneous speech.
Cheers,
David
I like the materials she used in her class. Most of the materials are handmade. It's cheap and simple but it works very well in helping the students memorize the words.
DeleteYou explain yr idea very clearly, i d like to add more by letting students act as Asli did. This helps them to create the sentences more.
DeleteI agree with you on Asli well-planned her lesson.
DeleteAfter watching the video I think Asli did very well in her class.I like her techniques in the class because she motivated students by picture card and let them play game like pictionary game that make all of students felt happy, fun and she very kind and friendly for her students.I like she planed well in her class.I think I can learn from Asli about techniques in class, how to motivated students in class, and activities in the class.
ReplyDeleteToiting; that response, while short, was sweet. I agree that she motivates by using picture cards, in this case masks. I am not so familiar with Pictionary though. Which of her activities are Pictionary-like?
DeleteAlso, what evidence is there that she planned this class well?
I look forward to hearing back from you on these matters,
Cheers,
David
I agree that what she can do best is motivating the students which is not an easy task to do. Effective motivateing will create good attitudes. Once the students possess good attitude, they will be willing to learn.
DeleteI agree with you that games are a good technique to motivate young learners in class and she planned well for her lesson.
DeleteToiting, I agree with you. Asli did very well in her class. She used picture cards to present the new words. It's very interesting. After that she asked the students to play game. It's a good idea to encourage the students to learn new thing by using game.
DeleteT.David 1. pictionary like photo slideshow. 2.She planed her lesson by she using lead in very interesting in the class.( asking one of them to be a teacher, elicited the vocabularies by using the masks with adjective)
DeleteI agree with you, in teaching teacher should create many games or activities to make students happy in class. Sometimes, they won't be bored in the difficult lesson.
Deletefor Asli video that i have seen, i feel appreciated in trying to create her teaching. Her techniques are varieties and interesting. She lets students express their ambitions by showing what they want to be. She motivates them participate by card (feeling masks), guess the miss cards, remember what they see and jot down, match the card. All activities make them funny and enjoy studying. In the short time, she sets all activities every great, students can study with fun.
ReplyDeleteAsli always encourages students answer the questions with smiling face, soft sound, these make students feel comfortable in reply. After watching, i should try a lot to prepare hard to make my students studying English with fun as Asli did.
Insightful response, Rin. You capture well how Asli creates such a positive environment for study by her use of a range of activities and a kind and supportive demeanour.
DeleteI am particularly interested in your statement "She lets students express their ambitions by showing what they want to be." Can you explain what you mean by it?
Cheers,
David
She motivated students by asking who wants to be a teacher? And tgen let studebt acts as a teacher.
Deletei like this activities, we use this to motivate students dare to speak english.
DeleteYes, what I like most is the atmosphere where students learn happily. She provides it through her smiley face and her friendly look. I think, even the decoration of the classroom makes it a fun place to learn. Asli provides her students with warm environment which makes her students learn enjoyably.
DeleteI love this way like you that Asli always encourages students answer the questions because asking questions is the good way to checking their understanding after studying. Teacher can observe understanding of students by their answers and continually solve their learning problems.
DeleteAfter watching the clip of Asli's teaching, I noticed that she had a variety of teaching techniques and students could participate in the study. Whether it is a hypothetical activity for students as teachers Leadership in the classroom, Mingle activities: Matching Vocabulary, Sentences and face masks.
ReplyDeleteConversely, she should to give the students frequent feedback and use more diverse words to motivate students and should call students to answer thoroughly.
For describing her with adjectives I think she has excellent classroom management. She is friendly and gentle for students. Most importantly, she taught happily.
I can learn Using gestures, teaching classroom management Teaching techniques using a variety of materials including face masks, PowerPoint to be a game to challenge students and the form of mingle activities that can be applied from Asli.
A good response, Namyen. I agree with you that Asli works well with her students and seems like she wants to be in the classroom. She indeed does use a wide range of activities to give her students the opportunity to learn.
DeleteYou say that you would like to see her use a more diverse group of words to motivate students. Can you suggest some expressions she could use to do this?
Cheers,
David
She could use some expressions by use some words to motivate such as excellent, good job, well, very well, Very good, wonderful, fantastic,... .Or have some awards or points for the students
DeleteI agree with Namyen that she had a variesty of teaching techniques and she should give more the students frequent feedback and use more diverse words to motivate students and should call students to answer thoroughly.
DeleteI think the same as Namyen that Asli has an excellent classroom management. She conducted variety activities and most students love to be part of every activities. Asli was also walking around the classroom while students were working to assist students who had problem with the activity. I agree with you that she corrected students gently which made her class in a good environment for learning.
DeleteAfter watching VDO,I think Asli had many the teaching technique, her activities suitable for ages,Improving into lessons with what students like and close to themselves, students are alerts all the time, there are interaction between teacher and students, student and student, organize students-centered activities, give priority to every answer and helping students when students can’t answer,I think that if teacher have this kind of activities, then can help students love English.
ReplyDeleteYou make some great points, Normy! Asli's students certainly stay alert and time is made available for them to work together; though I feel more time could have been allocated for this. You also identify that Asli helps students when they struggle to give the correct answers. I agree. I like it how she helps guide students to the correct answers through her questions and comments.
DeleteI have a question: What do you mean when you write "close to themselves?"
Cheers,
David
Yes, that's what make her different from Thai teachers. Thai teachers tends to focus more on grammar when teaching, and they will feel a bit frustrated when seeing mistakes in the extercises and writing. Sometimes as Thai teacher we may have to change our focus.
DeletePannaporn I agree with you.I like her teaching techniques and her activities in class.I will adapt her teaching techniques and her activities in my class.
DeleteIn my opinion, Asli used many techniques in every stages such as : lead-in, presentation, practice , production and feedback. During teaching, she motivated students and created a good relationship to students by many activities. For example, motivating students. I can learn from Asli such as How to manage the class, how to present vocabularies, how to create the activities that suit for students and everything has useful to me.
ReplyDeleteYour comments are sound, Tum. However can you be more specific? How for example does she motivate students apart from using a variety of activities? Then, what are some of the ways Asli presents vocabulary?
DeleteCheers,
David
She uses pictures to motivate the students find the meaning of the adjectives and uses games to motivate their feeling, it's suitable for students.
DeleteI agree with Teacher Tum .she uses to motivates the students.
DeleteHi Tum, thanks for bringing in more details. Can you elaborate further though? How exactly does the use of games motivate students?
DeleteCheers,
David
Entered on behalf of Penkhae:
ReplyDeleteI watched the video about the teaching technique of a teacher named Asli who used different activities to help her students learn. In class with good rapport, the students trusted the teacher because she had close relationship. She used activities to let the students learn about vocabularies and emotions. The student could use the adjective correctly. She could remember the student's name. She could manage the classroom and the students felt happy. It's good idea she used many materials example she used projector connect to a computer and paper masks. I think I will establish a good rapport with the students and prepare many activities the lesson.
An insightful response to the lesson, Khae. I think you are spot on in recognising that the number and variety of activities she uses and the rapport she has developed with her students are high points of Asli's performance.
DeleteHow do you think you can develop good rapport with your students?
Cheers,
David
Thank you for this good question I want to be a good rapport in order to produce an environment that will help my students. I will learn to call my students by name or nickname and learn something about my students' interests, hobbies and aspiration. I will take a moment to look up and smile at the students. As my students work on warm up problem,I go around and check homework. After check homework I and the students discuss and share idea together. I think I can check understand the students and give the students the positive feedback.
DeleteI strongly agree with Ms.Penkhae, the good and appropriate rapport between teacher and learners is significant and needed for an effective classroom environment.
DeleteAsli's lesson is very interesting. I think she did very well in her class. She uses many kinds of techniques to teach her class, such as lead-in, present, practice, and feedback. I like she introduces her class with the new vocabularies about feeling. And she also made the lesson interesting by letting students play game. Furthermore, The Pictionary game is to understand how different feeling look like. Masks in different looks can indicate the human’s feeling. Touching on the mask with eyes closing make the students use their imagination while touching. The results of remembering, touching, comparing, the different types of feelings. This is very effective way of learning expression. However, Asli didn’t give the feedback to students when she asked the students to write the sentences in their notebooks As a result, the students are not able to know right answers. The good point that I have found about Asli is her fantastic and active personality which can stimulate students to keep participate on her teaching. Learning from Alis’s lession, I can imitate her personal characters more active to keep students on track.
ReplyDeleteNong, you are correct about the significant impact of Asli's outgoing personality on her class. She is able to encourage students to make an effort.
DeleteThe idea of having actual masks you can touch and feel blindfolded as compared with masks simply drawn on butcher paper is an interesting one.
Regarding feedback, are you saying that Asli didn't give feedback on the 'gerund + makes me + adjective sentences the students used to describe feelings and wrote in their notebooks? She did, I believe, though try to guide them towards creating accurate sentences in the discussion session after the students watched the slides with a series of drawings of people engaged in activities.
I am glad that you plan to adopt Asli's active approach to keeping students on task.
Thanks, David. You make me clear for the feedback on Asli's teaching.
DeleteI agree with T.Nong because she shows 4 steps the first lead-in,present,practice and feedback,I think so students understand with her,I love induce’s Ali’s and give vocabulary about freeing the same T.Nong.
DeleteTeacher Nong can explain the mask activity so clearly, it is very useful for me to review and check what I missed. Thank you.
DeleteI agree with T.Nong I like Asli techniques to teach her class and how to give feedback to her students.
DeleteIn my opinion, Asli had done a very good job.The goals or aims she wanted to achieve that I could see in the video were teaching vocabulary and language structure. I liked the way she taught about feeling adjectives, the teaching materials were brilliant and motivating for learners. Even though, her way of teaching language structures was still classic and effective with the level of learners too. The techniques she used to manage the class, pair works, information gaps, discussions, etc., were in order smoothly. I think if I watch her or other teaching videos more, I will improve my teaching techniques and my class management to be more effective and more motivating to my students.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. You can explain about goals of her class. Thank you for discussion about idea. It 's useful for me.
DeleteThanks for sharing Benz. Asli does indeed prepare for her classes well and manage them well on the day. You said that you liked the teaching materials she used to teach feeling adjectives. Can you explain why?
DeleteCheers,
David
I think that Asli is very good teacher. She prepares interesting activity when you teach the student enjoy and happy in your class.she uses game to motivate.
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy, thanks for your post. I agree with you that Asli is a good teacher. Her activities are indeed interesting and her students seem to enjoy spending time in her class. I agree too that the games she uses motivate her students to participate in class actively.
DeleteCheers,
David
Asli's lesson is very interesting. She can manage the class well. Use many techniques to teach her class. She motivated students by picture card and let them play game and she very kind and friendly for her students.I think I can learn from Asli's techniques and adept for my class.
ReplyDeleteHi Aom, thanks for sharing. Can you elaborate on you post? What are some of the techniques Asli uses to teach her class? Does she really use 'picture cards?' I would say that she uses m_ _ks.
DeleteCheers,
David
When the teacher asked me,I take a technique to teach in my class,I believe Asli’s techniques help me.
ReplyDeleteFrom the question of the teacher “what do you mean when you write close to themselves?”it means, myself use very little activities with students in class, most will explain and allow students to do themselves without lesson before students there are no song no games, after that, I will use Asli’s techniques to use in the class.
ReplyDelete
